The shadows of blades
for feathers, a bird
swoops with blue thunder,
borne on a wind of violence;
accelerates,
surrounds,
captures,
fills,
transforms;
born into a fire of violence,
then separates
into burning tongues;
speaks.

Wonderful story for a poem. Lines 5-9 seem to evoke the musical composition's five movements.
ReplyDeleteI don't know how many times I've listened to Stravinsky's wonderful "Firebird" and seen the ballet; both are favorites.
The Pittsburgh Symphony site has a brief but lovely presentation of the story in music + animation, plus some extra extracts of combined tracks.

ReplyDeleteAlmost nothing skates like Firebird Suite. My son used excerpts for his Novice program. I've cut many versions and seen it skated many more. But your poem brings the fire I wish the skaters could speak with their blades. Thanks. Gay

ReplyDeleteLove the language, Glynn. The "borne/born" connection and the blue thunder/tongues of fire images have hooked me into this piece. Terrific.
