The Fires of Two Lifetimes

Two lifetimes ago, the
faces passed and the
names changed; hearts
were set afire and blazed
to the whiteness that comes
from seeing the shadow of
God, the shadow in the burning
bushes in the sacred sands
where he walks.
The sands themselves
flame in echo to the fiery
bushes; the leaves of the trees
ignite in a million red tongues of
visitation.
The mountains combust,
and I am in a playful mood.

The poem was posted for One Stop Poetry, which is a weekly event on Wednesday where all are welcome to participate.

Playful or not, you're really very good at this.

    "hearts
    were set afire and blazed
    to the whiteness that comes
    from seeing the shadow of
    God,"

    beautiful!!

  6. I really like how you ended this. It's a wonderful twist.

Notable how you use your fire metaphor, each line connecting back to the one before: hearts, afire, blazed, burning, flame, fiery, ignite, red tongues, combust.

  7. I had to come back after chewing my cud on this one. I think you'll think I'm weird for saying this, but to me it is the Star Breather reading his own poetry. He's in a playful mood when He creates. Tonight we should have a showing of the Northern Lights. I can't wait to see how he plays with us. :)

Sorry, I know that's not the most eloquent comment, but I'm seriously stunned. Incredible writing.

  19. You create such vivid images here Glynn. Flaming sands, igniting leaves, red tongues of visitation. I agree that this is a nice addition to OneShot. Thanks for dropping by and visiting in my world.

  20. I read this three times and the other's responses. My take is that this is a quite personal poem filled with a sense of intervention. A time when something or someone's who were hurtful were removed and left the writer character somewhat unscathed and free to become him/herself without fear. The imagery is powerful and is consummated in the last line.

  29. a poem that has other possibilities and undertone to us heathen Europeans! Thanks for dropping by and reading Campaigning. I’m drawn to poetry as a storytelling technique and this was about the life of a woman emptied out by the political ambitions of her husband.
