Fire in the Earth: 4 Poems

Finding light

He glances at the darkness
behind, over his shoulder,
and turns toward the light
within, knowing that
to find the light, to find
the fire, is to enter
the darkness.

Fire watch

He holds a branch, lit,
feeling the heat traverse
its length, warming
his hand. He waves it
in the night, a signal
for the fire watch.

Darkness within

Confronted with the inexorable logic
of a counter philosophy disguised
as experience and economics, he
turns to poetry, to the darkness
within, and finds it ablaze.

The ledger

The salesman sits by his window
counting his contracts, dreaming
his sales, calculating the cost
of raindrops on his soul.

  1. I like how you've captured the essence of that chapter from 'The Heart Aroused'; your poems speak to the universal. I especially like "Fire watch" for its vivid image and sense of being both mesmerized and consumed by what at once impels and leaves us standing back, if not altogether afraid.

  4. nice...love the raindrops line in the last one...so true though on entering the darkness to find that fire...but i really like the third...poetry for me has certainly helped explore my interior

  5. Like Brian, I find the raindrop reference provocative.

  8. Love ALL of these images of turning with intention into the darkness - and finding the place ablaze. That is the journey of life, I think. Keep turning, keep risking, keep discovering those flames. Thanks for these. And for each of the posts in this series. Wish I'd had a little more space inside to do this study.
