Saturday Good Reads - Nov. 4, 2023

It’s not a story I ever expected to see in New York Magazine, a publication that no one would call one of those “crazy right-wing conspiracy theory” magazines. But there it was: “COVID Lockdowns Were a Giant Experiment. They were a Failure” by writers Joe Nocera and Bethany McLean.

Is the art world so consumed by politics that it’s hurting or even destroying itself? Pierre d’Alancaisez at The Critic Magazine says it’s eating itself, while Nina Power at Compact Magazine sees politics creating “The Fog of Art.”

A chorus of voices has been rising, saying that the United States cannot sustain a $33.5 trillion debt. Many are ridiculing the new Speaker of the House for tying aid to Israel to a reduction in federal spending, but, if nothing else, it’s a gesture toward addressing a federal budget that’s out of control. Someone’s going to get hurt, and the government, writes Lewis Andrews at The Spectator, is taking steps to take care of itself. I’m still trying to choke down the idea that last year’s Inflation Reduction Act is going to take the savings from negotiating drug prices to fund green energy projects.
