After 1 Corinthians 1:10-17
One follows one
one follows
another
one follows a
third:
divisions,
factions,
groups, sides,
identity
defined not by
oneness
but by self
by clique
factions click
in disharmony
It doesn’t work
this way:
not spoon
slicing meat
not fork
scooping soup
oneness,
together
not divisions,
never
you are hostage
to yourselves
be what you are
not what you do.

I love this, Glynn....
this is my favorite part, I think;
but by self
by clique
factions click
in disharmony
The last line reminds me of my son in second grade, fighting that inner pull to BE WHAT YOU DO - because he was one of those kids who was good at a lot of things and he felt overwhelmed by everyone predicting his career path based on what he was good at. One day he laid out a proclaimation: "MOMMY - Just because I'm GOOD at something doesn't mean I have to BE it!" I'm not really sure that his struggle is related at all to your meaning here, but I'm not sure it isn't, either. Identity is a tricky thing.
Beautiful poem, Glynn.
Donna - thank you! And I like you're son's response!
In todays environment this speaks so much truth...bkm
