Pano Kanelos was the president of St. John’s University in Baltimore. He’s also a Shakespeare scholar. Distraught at what was happening at his own university as well as so many others in America, he stepped down – and moved to Texas, where he’s building the University of Austin, “dedicated to the fearless pursuit of truth.” There was a time when many universities were like that.
C.R. Wiley published a book recently, In the House of Tom Bombadil, about one of the most mysterious characters in all of J.R.R. Tolkien’s works – Tom Bombadil. Who is he, and why did Tolkien include him? Jeremy Johnston at Front Porch Republic has a review, and wonder if there’s one answer to rule them all.
My favorite read of this week is by Sylvia Schroder, who blogs at When the House is Quiet. She nad her husband just celebrated a “major anniversary,” and she asks (and answers) the question, “Who Knew When We Said ‘I Do’?”
