The way of sand

After Matthew 7:21-27

He walks a beach

inhaling the beauty of the sea

sky sand sun

sand stretching across shore

horizontally

he steps among castles

of silicon granular cities

of sand standing in the sun

oblivious to encroaching waves

He considers rocky ground

once but easier is

the way of sand

The dangers of sand

After Matthew 7:21-27

Dancing on sand

as the tide flows in

covering feet before

ebbing out again

over and over each time

a little higher

a little longer

retreating more slowly

as wave after wave

washes sand

washes sand away

sand dunes are beautiful

but ephemeral

a silicon mirage

Games

After Matthew 7:21-27

Playing a game of rock

paper scissors is for children

an inexpensive way to pass

time to entertain to compete

with low stakes, usually

Older we reach for another game

called rock and sand, constructing

a life on rock or a life on sand

the sand of celebrity

sand of fame and entertainment

sand of obeisance to the ephemeral

sand of beauty sand of wealth

sand all sand

rock can be, is a hard place

sometimes cold and jagged, sharp

and stabbing but always

solid
