Even the bad stuff

After Philippians 1:12-18

I didn’t expect to end up
like this, chains on my arms
and legs, and a dank, dark cell;
it’s not exactly what we’d call
entering the city in triumph.
I must have missed
the commemorative arch. And
the waiting – a prison cell
of its own, day by day,
waiting to be called and
heard. There is no king
but Caesar; indeed?
Suffering becomes self-pity
becomes anger, until the day
the guard asks me to explain,
and I do. Then another guard
asks, and the prisoner
in the next cell as well,
silencing his own chains
to listen. Then I understand,
only then, that I am here
in this place, even this forgotten,
condemned place, to serve
a purpose, the help fulfill
a plan, and I am struck with
wonder that even the bad stuff
is the good stuff.

To sit in chains

After Philippians 1:9-11

To sit in chains and see
the freedom, to smell
the prison pouring into me
and know the liberty confirmed,
to feel the dirt of the jail
on my skin and in my mouth,
and know the love showered
on me, to see the place
I occupy in the heart,
is to know these chains
represent the blessing given,
the heart filled,
the mind embraced,
the soul protected.

To release the chains

After Romans 6:1-14

To release the chains
required a death like
his death, with a promise
of release from death

and I told myself
this seems circular
not linear, this
death-life-death

death is spiritual
death is physical
sometimes

dead to this life
alive to next life

the chains fall
from wrists
from ankles
the chains drop

death is dead
I see you through
God’s eyeglasses
