Trail at sunset, or sunrise

It is a trail, flat,

winding its paved way

around a placid lake,

a silent timepiece,

minutes and seconds

sounding with each step,

moving to the sun,

or away from it,

timepieces do that.

Darkness slows as it

approaches sunset,

quickens as it sees

sunrise, the only hints

of which one being

the lessening touch

of God’s breath rustling

the leaves of the trees,

the sound of the child

wanting to go home.

A trail, upward

A trail, upward

rocky without green

trail of stone and slate

leading through outcroppings

of stone and slate and

the overhang of trees higher up

winding a way past clouds

into the horizon of bright blue

at the top, partially, clouds

eventually part to reveal

what’s behind: the vision

of a trail leading downward

toward the beginning.
