Birthday

It’s a window isn’t it
a pane of polished sand
that doesn’t separate time
or reality but effects a separation
of the mind, of a perception
that something changes
as the clock ticks and sounds
on its circular way

candles add light
but not understanding
necessarily

It’s not winter yet

It’s not winter yet
but it should be

            leaves gone
            frost, chances
            of ice, sleet
            but not snow
            yet

watching the rain
through a glass wall
puddles pimpling
with raindrops

dreariness and darkness
dreariness of soul
and spirit

the man walks by
with his umbrella
open

sit by the glass wall
watching the rain
watching the reflection
curtained by rain

it’s not winter yet

Glass, no stain

The window glass is not clear
but it is not colored, no stain
to reflect reds, yellows, blues.
The light filters through,
suffusing and bathing the interior
and this on a cloudy day.
