Startling news, indeed,
what the angel said
to the young girl, that
she would bear the son.
And when the news
was greeted first
by a cousin as a miracle
and with praise,
the young girl sang.
She sang in praise,
she sang in gratitude,
she sang in recognition,
she sang in worship,
she sang in understanding,
she sang in acceptance,
she sang in awe.

Her soul trembles as
it magnifies the knowing
of what’s been done,
a spirit rejoicing
within a girl, a peasant
of no account,
chosen to be,
chosen to bear.
And this girl knows,
and this girl sings,
a great thing has been done,
that great blessing flows,
that great mercy floods,
a generational grace is won.
She sees the new strength,
an unexpected power,
scattering the proud,
dethroning the mighty,
filling the hungry,
dismissing the wealthy,
empty.
And this girl,
this peasant girl,
carries the promise made,
bears the promise kept,
for generations back,
for generations onward.
And so she sings.
