Surrounded by Thieves

Why curse a den of thieves
doing what is normal/expected/
allowed/encouraged/aided –
did the priests get their cut?

Thieves cluster like cancer
out of remission, devouring
the desire for worship, abetted
by those entrusted with worship.

Coins jangle through booths
and stalls, the unholy marriage
of faith and commerce, children
of greed and deception.

Driving them away today,
standing between them Friday.

His house shall be a house of prayer for all nations... Love the powerful imagery here, Glynn. Thanks so much.

cleanse the temple
that You build
within these walls
flesh and blood

As I read this and re-read it along with the account of Jesus cleansing the temple, I can't help but think... thieves do not just steal our coins.

They attack our joy, leaving us feeling weak and less than we truly are.
